How soon can I go to school after a breast reduction?

Question

I am in high school. I have talked to my mom and have an appointment set up with my doctor to talk about getting a breast reduction. I am a 38 L and so my mom doesn't think I will have trouble getting the insurance to pay for the surgery. I am just worried about the amount of time I could potentially miss from school. I have spring break so I was wondering if two weeks would be enough time before I go back to school? Or would it be best to have the procedure scheduled during the summer?

Congratulations on your decision to proceed with breast reduction surgery; this operation tends to be one of the most patient pleasing operations we perform. Your plastic surgeon will have specific advice/instructions for you. Generally speaking, I advise patients to take at least 2 weeks off before going back to school. Two weeks should be plenty of time to return to school if everything goes smoothly. (I have had patients return to work in 3 days.) You will have to avoid strenuous activity for at least 4-6 weeks. If you have to carry heavy books, you may want some help with that for a little while as well. Having your surgery done now will make your summer much more pleasant with well healed, smaller and more manageable breasts. (Bathing suit shopping will be much more fun!)

Thank you for your question.  Many patients find that they are able to return to work or school within a week to two weeks after surgery.  It is important, however, not to participate in physical activities, sports, exercise, etc. you should wait a minimum of 3-6 weeks depending on if your recovery is uneventful.Best regards,Dr. Lane F. This is a difficult question to completely answer.  2 weeks after surgery is reasonable but it depends on your recovery at that time.  It would be best to ask your operating plastic surgeon.

Typically you may return to light duty, sedentary jobs or school in a week or so. Bviously, it would take a bit longer for heavier activity. Ask your plastic surgeon what his/her preferences are.
