Can 2 jaw surgeries and full facelift be done together or around the same time?

We frequently combine procedures with facelifts including eyelids, brows, nose reshaping, and chin procedures. However, it is probably best not to perform double jaw surgery at the same time as a facelift for several reasons. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, the underlying facial skeleton sets the base for the overlying soft tissues. Since double jaw surgery will change the relative positions of the upper and lower lips, chin, and mandible we would like this to be firmly established to be able to perform the best face-lifting surgery and assure the best possible results. You would need to separate these two surgeries by at least 6 to 9 months apart. Jaw surgery causes a large amount of facial swelling which would negatively affect any soft tissue tightening surgery over it.

  Upper and lower jaw surgery is performed by an oral surgeon  under general anesthesia in the hospital setting with at least 1 or 2 night stay at a hospital.  A facelift procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure.  These 2 procedures should be separated in time by at least 3-6 months,  and the jaw surgery should probably be done first.

I would stage the two. The two jaw surgery is quite extensive work and that probably should be done first.  I would wait at least 6 months to perform the facelift.

Hi and thank you for your question . I would definitely separate out the two surgeries . I would do the jaw surgery first because the swelling is very dramatic which in turn could keep your soft tissues from the face lift from healing properly . You would want your jaw in the place it's going to be in permanently so that the face lift could be done as per your new jawline for a nice smoothing effect . Also make sure to review their work and before and after photos . 

Since the issues are related but not the same tissues, I would think it would be possible. Is it one surgeon or two. If it is one surgeon, let the surgeon advise you. If two surgeons, they need to discuss. I would be optimistic.All the best,Talmage Raine MD

As often is recommended, choose your Plastic Surgeon first, but be sure that he or she is highly recommended in your community.  This focus may lead to a suitable answer for your question after you have had a full examination.  In general, however,  I would not do both procedures together, and would believe that the jaw surgery should be done first.  Months later the facelift may be done.Good luck to you.Frank Rieger M.D.  Tampa Plastic Surgeon
