Breast sudden sharp pain after miraDry? It has been 2 weeks since the first miraDry treatment was done (level 5)

Question

So far recovering has been very good, swelling is going down, mild pain, small bumps etc. However, about two days ago I started experiencing short sharp needle-like pain on both breasts, similar to those when I was lactating, the best possible way I can describe it. It feels like mild electric current is traveling from the inside of the breast towards the nipple. Could this be related to Mirady? btw I;m not pregnant. Thank you very much

I have co-authored a book on Miradry and am a regional referral center for hyperhidrosis. Swelling will subside with time. If it bothers you, I would suggest SwellX tablets for at least a week after treatment. The pulling that some patients feel may be improved with massage with or without Plato's Scar Serum. #miraDry microwaves penetrate less than 5 mm deep, between the
skin  and underlying fat. miraDry   is a
third generation microwave-based device that selectively heats this area where
the sweat glands  and odor glands reside.
The  vacuum system  within the handpiece lifts the skin and
underlying tissue a few millimeters into the treatment chamber. During the
treatment cycle (consisting of energy delivery time and post-cool time) cooling
fluid flows through a chamber in contact with the skin, protecting the
epidermis and upper dermis from excess heating. Structures deeper than the
sweat glands are protected from heat injury due to the limited penetration
depth of microwave energy. Breast tissue is not affected and there are no
reports of untoward problemsThe injections and treatment do come close to irritating the nerves coming out of the ribs that go into the breast.  Irritation is possible..  This will get better

Thank you for your question.  miraDry is an excellent treatment for hyperhidrosis, however it does heat the underlying structures and can cause some transient effects.  It may be that a branch of your sensory nerve that emanates from the intercostal nerves may have been heated as part of the treatment causing a transient injury and as the nerves recover, they are causing you that electric current sensation.  Because it is traveling towards the nipple, it is likely the 4th intercostal nerve.  As a plastic surgeon, we try to avoid injury to this nerve during breast augmentation procedures so we don't end up with permanent numbness in this area.If you are feeling the nerve as it recovers, then there is a great chance that the injury is temporary and your symptoms will improve.  I would definitely let your provider know and they may modify your next treatment (if needed) or modify their technique for future patients so they don't have this concern.

I had the miradry present done myself and I had little pain. Sometimes it did feel weird when I would stretch a certain way but that went away. We are a very busy miradry practice and haven't had anyone with any permanent pain or lumps. Just give it some time.Sheila Nazarian

We are a Platinum Plus Provider for miraDry, a designation given to a few centers around the country which do a high volume of cases a year.The pain will go away. In my experience any pain/discomfort is temporary; so you should not be alarmed or discouraged.  Keep your doctor informed.  What it sounds to me that is happening is you are feeling pain radiating down from the axilla (armpit) into the breast region, and I am guessing this happens when you reach up or extend your arm outwards.  For now, continue to ice the area for 10 minutes every 3-4 hours and pain medication (per your doctor).  Usually ibuprofen does the trick.  If your symptoms persist then let your doctor know.  Be well.

This is an unusual description that you should follow up with the doctor's office where you had the procedure done. It is probably just swelling working it's way down; it is possible that some of the edema has migrated into your breast tissue from your axilla after the treatment. It does not sound worriesome but it is good to follow up with your doctor to be sure as there have been some instances of infection.
