The reason the teas are not good leading up to surgery are for a couple reasons. First of all, they really are not going to do you any good or benefit leading up to surgery. You would be better off taking a multi-vitamin for a month before. Second, tea companies are not regulated and we do not know anything of what they are putting in there and you don't want to mess with your body when you are leading up to surgery. Third, there are a lot of herbal things that are ok for life in general (vitamin E oils, ginseng, echinacea, etc...) but these have all been shown to mess with the clotting cascade and cause you to bleed and ooze more during surgery (we don't want more bleeding!)Fourth, if you are drinking them to "detox" or lose weight leading up to surgery, there is much more chance that you will be more dehydrated leading into surgery than you will have actually lost a few pounds. If you are more dehydrated, it is going to mess with your blood pressure, heart rate, and make you overall feel more crummy after surgery. It makes recovery tougher. So in short, it isn't going to do you much good, but it can make things worse in a lot of ways. Ramsen Azizi M.D.Double Board Certified Plastic SurgeonR.A.M. Thank you for your question. What I recommend you is follow all your plastic surgeon advice to have the best results of your desire and a good experience in this journey. Respectfully,Dr. Emmanuel Mallol Cotes.-
You should follow you plastic surgeon's advice. I advise my patients to STOP ALL sources of Vitamin E, e.g., Vitamin E pills, multivitamins, Slim Fast Ensure Plus, ALL HERBS, e.g. Ginko, Garlic, Ginseng, natural or health preparations e.g. bee’s pollen, protein powders, etc. 1 week before surgery. Removing teas from your diet prior to surgery can reduce such side effects as accelerate heart rate or BP elevation. Shown to reduce blood clotting, green tea can lead to postoperative complications and lengthen your healing time.
Hello and thank you for your question. Plastic surgeons have their own protocol when it comes to pre and post op care. Many of the herbal supplements, vitamins, food additives, green tea, etc can interfere with forming blood clots and prolong bleeding time (increased bruising, etc). I would suggest that you follow your surgeon’s protocol. Best wishes and good luck, Pejman Aflaki, M.D. Johns Hopkins-trained double board-certified plastic surgeon
Dear Renelle118,most plastic surgeons have a list of medications, supplements, natural products which they recommend to stop using prior to surgery because they can interfere with anesthesia, healing, etc. But every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
It has been known that over 400 natural product, foods, additives, tea (green tea) can cause increased bleeding during surgery. We strongly recommend to our patients to stop taking ANY natural products except medications prescribed by their physician 30 days before surgery. They can continue taking these products a week after surgery. Good luck.
It is critical for you stop drinking and eating any products that may thin your blood in preparation for a BBL. Please consider a virtual consultation with a high definition BBL provider so you can receive the full list of avoided foods, medicines, and supplements that include teas.
Some surgeons have a long list of things to avoid that can potentially interfere with surgery, healing or forming healthy blood clots.I am not one of them. I look at the things that make big differences like taking aspirin, ibuprofen. In my practice you can drink as much tea as you want to. My question to you is why can’t you not stop drinking tea for a month if your doctor feels that’s a good idea.I can tell you this. There is no science that supports the stopping tea consumption is necessary for 30 days to have an impact on surgery.Products that cause permanent blood clot inhibition like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be stopped for seven days but don’t need to be stopped for longer than that. 30 days seems like a very conservative amount of time but each plastic surgeon gets to set their own rules. If these are the rules set forth by the surgeon do you want to do your procedure then how hard can it be to follow them?Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
Hello, thank you for your question !We recommend being at a stable weight preoperatively, as weight fluctuations can alter your result. Weight gain/loss is caused by individual fat cells growing larger or smaller; fat cells do not "disappear" with normal weight loss. Therefore, if you were to ...
