I had Restylane injected in my undereye area, 0.5ml each side. It caused mild edema 3 weeks post treatment (only on the left side) and was dissolved, which left my tear through area depressed and with spots of minor swelling. A more experienced doctor recommended 0.6 ml of Juvederm Volbella to refill the same area. He also uses Teosyal, but he seemed keen on the Volbella. My question is, would Volbella be likely to make my eye swell again? Or does it all depend on the skill of the injector?

Answer: Volbella and swelling This is a question I get from a lot of patients. First the injector needs to be experienced in this area as it is very difficult to inject. Second the choice of filler is also very crucial. The newer fillers bind to water less and much thinner and typically are used more in my office. All fillers swell and can last up to one week. I tell my patients that if swelling is an issue make sure that any environmental allergies are under control to alleviate more swelling than normal. Consider taking arnica montana the day before the procedure as well as several days afterwards. Suggest benadryl at night while there is swelling and zyzal during the day as an anti-histamine response. Keep head of bed elevated and ice for swelling. The other reason some people get a lot of swelling is just too much product is injected inhibiting lymph drainage and its the practitioner that should be able to tell the patient is multiple sittings are needed. When it comes to tear troughs I tell people rather add then take away. Hope this helps and would highly seek out an experienced provider.

Answer: Choice of fillers Thanks for your question. In theory, Volbella does not tend to cause as much swelling as some other hyaluronic acid fillers as it draws in or attracts less water, but in actual practice, almost everyone has swelling under the eyes after injections. It takes a few days for this to subside, and you can use ice packs and elevate the head the rest of the day after injections, depending on the specific instructions of your injector. Technique does also play a role in post procedure swelling, so be sure to see an expert and do expect some swelling regardless of the specific product used. Best of luck!
