Pneumonia 10 Weeks Post Op Tummy Tuck. Could It Be the Cause?

The occasional patient with lung infections after surgery get their symptoms early on--days or a week. At ten weeks, I would find it harder to place the blame on the surgery itself. 

Hopefully at the emergency room they checked you out for the possibility of blood clots to the lung (pulmonary embolism) which should be high on the list of causes for shortness of breath. Usually a chest CT scan would be done to make or exclude the diagnosis. Its treatment is not antibiotics. If no one mentioned this possibility to you a call to your plastic surgeon or primary physician is in order. Today.

Yes it could be related but possibly not.  After surgery and anesthesia, activity is decreased and atalectasis  may occur in the lungs.  This means all the lung is not filled with air and fluid collects.  The prolonged course and pain could foster pneumonia.  It is hard to tell for sure.  Best to be active now, lots of fluids, deep breaths, get a spirometer, follow your doctors directions regarding medication and you wiill be fine.  My Best    Dr C
