Can a person with sickle cell trait have a tummy tuck with lipo?

In general, patients with sickle cell trait can safely undergo elective cosmetic surgical procedures, especially when they're overall healthy and have no history of sickle problems previously. In my practice I would definitely require clearance from your hematologist before proceeding with surgery, but assuming that all of your pre-operative lab work and clearance are in order, you would likely be a safe candidate. However, since every patient and situation are different, in in person consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon for a detailed medical history, exam and discussion of your options is essential. I have operated on patients with the sickle cell trait who desire plastic surgery.  To some extent this depends upon overall health and previous problems during surgery, pregnancy, or other periods of stress.   Your board certified plastic surgeon may require a screening by a hematologist prior to scheduling your surgery, but having the trait should not prevent the TT from occurring.

Getting a plastic surgery done when having the sickle cell trait is possible. However not all the patients with this condition should be treated the same way. We have to individualize the case in other to avoid further complications related specifically to the tissues oxygen supply.   Patients with the sickle cells trait tends to have lower hemoglobin levels than the average patient.  So this means the before the surgery a complete evaluation of a hematologist should be done and a clearance letter from this department should be considered.   Have a great day.Dr. Derby Sang Caputo, MD. 

Most people with sickle cell trait can be operated on without complications. It is important that you are well oxygenated and hydrated during and after your surgery to prevent any sickle problems. Of course you will need pre operative clearance from your primary care provider and get blood work ahead of time.

The answer to your question is yes, you can have this procedures performed even if you have SCD trait, however, your hemoglobin level needs to be assessed first in order to give you a definitive answer. Sickle cell trait patients have very unique ways of manifesting the trait, some don't have basically any anemia, and others, even though with just a trait, might have a bit of anemia normally on their routine physical in which case you would have to work it up in order to get both procedures done. A small amount of patients tend not to be able to work up the levels of hemoglobin high enough, this small group would indeed have to separate both procedures. Yes, you can still have a tummy tuck, even if you are a sickle cell trait gene carrier. I have found that many patients can get GOOD results with liposuction alone, and EXCELLENT results with IDEAL Liposuction! IDEAL Lipo is a proprietary technique that we have been developing for the past 12 years. First off, all devices and instruments used are FDA-approved, unlike many fat harvest and transfer devices beying used today. These procedures are typically performed in the office, with only local anesthesia (although patients can request deeper sedation, if they so desire). We typically use Smart / Laser Liposuction or VASER (ultrasound) to reduce dense, fibrous fat, and stimulate collagen formation; Radiofrequency-based skin tightening (like Body Tite, or Thermi) to maximize skin contraction; and Ultrasound, RF, or subcision (Z Wave, Venus, Cellfina) to treat cellulite. Patients go home the day of surgery; typically do not use any narcotics postop for pain control, and are back to light exercise and work 48 hours after their procedures. In my practice, we specifically evaluate patients for these additional treatments, and select the appropriate treatment based on their skin quality, amount of fat, previous treatment(s), and surgical goals. It is best to answer your question during a face-to-face evaluation, when you can discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure, and you can have a physical examination to evaluate for that procedure. I recommend that you find a board-certified, or board-eligible plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable. Be sure to have all of your questions answered during a face-to-face meeting with your surgeon, and review before and after pictures of similar patients whom have had this procedure.
