Can you get new stretch marks after Liposuction? (photos)

Question

I had liposuction 10 day ago, and I have been wearing a compression garment since. The skin around my abdomen is itchy and flaky, and today I found what looks to be new stretch marks. Are they stretch marks or are they irritation due to the compression garment?

I suggest posting before photos , as this is not something I have ever seen with patients and likely can be improved with external radiofrequency treatments (thermage, venus legacy, velashape, viora etc).  Best, Dr. Emer.

If you are wearing a garment I doubt you are getting new stretch marks. However, your old marks are probably swollen and more noticable. Follow up with your surgeon.

Thanks for yuor inquiry, stretch marks usually occur with hormonal stimulus in times of tissue expansion like pregnancy and puberty. It is hard to tell from a picture, but I would ask your surgeon if you are wearing the right type and size of compression, good luck.

Stretch marks are generally caused by significant stretching and tension on the skin as with quick weight gain, fast growth in puberty, or pregnancy.  You may need to see your surgeon to ensure that your garment is fitting correctly and not causing unusual pressure/irritation on your skin.  Some surgeons use foam inserts under compression that can cause some pressure marks which may not be universally well tolerated.

You are early in your post op recovery.  10 days out you're still swollen, your skin can be irritated from the surgery, the garment, a combination of both.  Liposuction should not cause new stretch marks.  Your skin will change with swelling so your stretch marks will look different & more pronounced sometimes.  The compression garment is good to continue to wear post op.  Best of luck with recovery.

I have not seen patients develop stretch marks from liposuction.The skin can look different after liposuction and this is especially true for patients who have moderate skin laxity or stretch marks before the procedure.Compression garments can leave imprints.A 10 days it's too soon to make any conclusions about final results in regards to skin, contour or any other aspect.Best,Mats Hagstrom M.D.
