I hurt my nose 9 days ago playing soccer. CT scan finds there are displaced fractures through the nasal bone and deviation of the fractures to the left. Remainder of nasal septum is normal. Swelling in the morning but stopped after 3 days. Nose feels drummy when i tap. I have no breathing difficulties and don't really feel any pain. Do I need to undergo a closed reduction procedure? Can I continue my gym activities (weight and cardio)? Thank you and appreciate your advice Chris
Answer: You can play with a nose guard on. you still have a lot of swelling and this will continue to be a problem in the future,If you don't have it fixed in the first 2 weeks, then you should wait 3 months. In the meantime ,you can work out without a face guard

Answer: Nasal bone fractures and sports You can reduce the fracture if there is a cosmetic or functional need. Returning to contact sports is a judgement call. I've had athletes who for one reason or another had to return to their sport early knowing full well if they are hit in the nose the severity of the new fracture could be much worse than the original. Once a month passes you should be in fair shape but the nose won't be well-healed and very solid for about two months and continues to improve in strength and swelling as the months pass.

Answer: Do I have a displaced fractured nose? When can I come back to soccer? Do I need to undergo a closed reduction procedure? HI and thanks for your question. Your CT exam demonstrates a displaced nasal fracture. It will take about 6 weeks to properly heal so I would recommend that you avoid any contact sports during this time period to avoid injury and further deviation. Good luck.

Answer: Nasal fracture repair A nasal fracture does not necessarily have to be repaired and can be left alone whether it's displaced, or non-displaced. It's also important to evaluate the upper lateral cartilages and the nasal septum at the same time. In our practice, we do not perform closed reduction of a nasal fracture, however we perform open reduction of a nasal fracture with osteotomies through a closed rhinoplasty approach with all incisions placed on the inside of the nose. This allows better realignment of the nasal bones. From the one very limited photograph it appears the nose is fairly straight ,so it may be best to wait and reevaluate in one month once the swelling has subsided

Answer: Do I have a displaced fractured nose? When can I come back to soccer? Do I need to undergo a closed reduction procedure? Hello Chrisluu,Looking at your CT scans it does appear to show a left nasal fracture. The swelling from this will last several weeks, so what the CT shows may become more noticeable as the swelling goes away. The CT shows a fracture that would be amenable to a closed reduction. The questions is whether you need it. Since you aren't having any breathing difficult, you don't NEED to have it fixed. But if the cosmetic changes you can expect would bother you, you should consider having it fixed. There is a time window for a closed reduction that is rapidly approaching. I'd recommend you consult with a facial plastic surgeon ASAP if you are interested in repair. Even if you aren't, your ability to return to contact sports would be about the same time whether you have a closed reduction or not. For the actual timing you would need to discuss this with your surgeon. I hope this helps and good luck.
