Is my hyoid bone too low for chin liposuction? (Photo)

I am a 22 year old female wanting liposuction on a stubborn pocket of fat under my chin that I’ve had since puberty. It does not respond to weight loss whatsoever. I’ve recently learned about the hyoid bone and wondered if mine is too low for this procedure?

Hi! The x-ray is extremely helpful actually. I think that if you were to get liposuction, you will get some improvement as long as you have realistic expectations that you will not get, for example, the most acute cervicomental angle (i.e. angelina jolie status) because of the hyoid position. You can kind of see on the x-ray what you might expect to achieve.

Hello, hope you are well. Your hyoid position is not too low, but the question you should be asking is whether liposuction is a suitable procedure for you. I think it is more likely that there is a deep layer of fat causing the fullness under the chin. This deep fat layer can only be reduced via an incision under the chin--sometimes referred to as a 'mini necklift'. Liposuction, which addresses superficial fat only, may fall short. In any case, the best course of action is to have an in-person consultation so that the area can be directly assessed visually and by palpation.

The Hyoid bone position will not affect your issue. Liposuction will give you a very good result and an enhanced profile.

Your hyoid bone is irrelevant. It's very important to understand if there are two compartments of fat, and they're located both above and below the platysma muscle in your neck. The majority of your fat deposits are located below the muscle, which will require a neck lift procedure with a platysma plasty to significantly improve the jawline. Liposuction alone will only remove the fat deposits above the muscle, which will be an incomplete removal.
