Answer: Vaser Liposuction for Hepatitis C Patients: What to Expect Thank you for your question regarding Vaser liposuction and hepatitis C. Being Hepatitis C positive does not automatically disqualify you from undergoing Vaser liposuction, especially since you mention being in excellent health with a perfect BMI. Many plastic surgeons are experienced in working with patients who have underlying conditions like hepatitis C, provided that the condition is well-managed and does not interfere with your overall health and healing capacity. However, your plastic surgeon will likely want to ensure your liver function is stable since Hepatitis C can affect the liver. You may need to provide recent bloodwork and undergo a thorough evaluation with your primary care physician or hepatologist to ensure you’re healthy enough for surgery. As long as you are in good health and there are no complications from your condition, most plastic surgeons would proceed with the procedure, taking necessary precautions. During your consultation, be open about your Hepatitis C status and bring all relevant medical information to help your surgeon assess your individual situation. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen

Answer: Plan cosmetic surgery, but preop hepatitis C positive You must call your surgeon ASAP because the surgeon should make the decision or talk to your primary care in infectious disease doctor most likely I would cancel your surgery unless unless I had a full written medical clearance from an infectious disease doctor. Good luck.

Answer: Elective cosmetic surgery on patients with hepatitis C Discriminating based purely under patients having a viral infection that is potentially contagious is considered illegal. Each plastic surgeon is free to make their own assessment regarding the appropriateness of surgery for a variety of reasons. The decision cannot legally be made purely based on having a viral infection, but could be made if they believe the patience overall medical condition does not justify having the procedure. You may or may not be an ideal candidate for Liposuction and much of this tends to be pretty subjective. Personally, as long as the viral infection is not creating secondary health concerns, I typically have no issue doing surgery on people who are either HIV or hepatitis positive. I usually do request medical clearance and want to get confirmation that the condition has been appropriately medically managed. For example, it may be reasonable to request that a patient has anti-hepatitis C antiviral treatment before considering elective cosmetic surgery if they’ve not had that previously.
