Hit in chest after breast augmentation. Could it have caused a rupture?

aarivera530. I appreciate your concern, however it takes a significant blow to the chest to rupture a silicone or saline breast implant. Having said that, I have had patients rupture implants after car accidents from the seatbelt and during kickboxing! For that reason follow up with your plastic surgeon and if there is any doubt, ultrasound of the breast will be helpful. I am sorry to hear that you have experienced such a scary incident.  It is very possible that everything is fine and you will be symptom free soon.  On the other hand, there could be a rupture of the implant and you should see your plastic surgeon for evaluation.  He/she can send you for a mammogram and/or MRI to very if the implant is intact.  Hope this helps.

Silicone implants does not easily rupture. It takes a high amount of force to cause damage. Usually it is presented with severe swelling, constant sharp, aching pains that persists even at night, and bruising. Early medical consultation with your surgeon is key to know if there was any damage done on the implants after the trauma. 

Hello, and thank you for your question. It does take a considerable amount of pressure to rupture a silicone implant, but that’s not to say it’s impossible. I would recommend checking in with your plastic surgeon since you seem to be in a significant amount of pain, just to make sure everything is as it should be. If your plastic surgeon suspects a rupture, the next step would be to get an MRI to determine if your implant is, in fact, ruptured.

Thank you for your question.  Breast implants have a breakpoint level of stress that they can handle before they rupture, and direct trauma like that can cause a rupture.  Of course if you get hit that hard, the surrounding skin, muscle, and bone can be the source of pain too.  I recommend being evaluated by your plastic surgeon to get evaluated, and you may require imaging (ultrasound, MRI) to confirm the diagnosis.
