Can I use electric stimulation to promote nerve regeneration after Breast Augmentation?

ES is used after surgery to reduce pain, swelling, bruising and promote healing by sending impulses through the skin to stimulate the nerves of the upper and lower extremities.   A clinical study at the University of Alberta to be completed by August 2021 involves testing sensation prior to surgery then again at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months following mastectomy and reconstruction to evaluate the effects of ES on sensory return. Perhaps the results of this study will shed some light on the effectiveness and safety of ES to promote nerve regeneration after BA. Recommend that you ask your PS for his/her opinion.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  For most patients who suffer a sensation change to their breasts after surgery, time alone typically resolves this, but it can take 6-12 months.  Though ES is unlikely to cause any complication, I would recommend speaking with your surgeon first.  Hope this helps.

It is not uncommon to lose sensation following breast augmentation early on. It usually returns over time. I am not aware of ES being helpful in recovering this. Make your surgeon aware of what you are experiencing.
