I'm having Thermi smooth on my face. Is this normal?

If you're only able to achieve 40 degrees celsius then its doubtful that you're going to see optimal results.  As the other doctors mentioned, the target heat range is anywhere form 43-47 degrees for optimal collagen tightening.  To achieve these higher temperatures, we make sure that enough gel is being used on the skin and that we keep the probe moving and in contact with the skin at all times.  That being said, not all of our patients tolerate these higher temperatures but the ones that do are the ones that see the best results.  I actually have had 2 treatments myself and was able to increase the temperature to around 45 degrees with good tolerance of the heat.I hope that helps!

I agree with below.  It should be 40-45 usulally 42/43 degrees and it should be tolerable.  We often combine sculptra and thermage first to get collagen stimulation then use the thermi for long term maintenance and lifting.  Then you get both volume and lifting.  Please see an expert.  Best, Dr. Emer.

The 40 is the temperature in degrees celsius. 40 degrees is probably too low to be effective. We usually do 42-43 degrees. Most patients tolerate this temperature just fine. If you don't keep the probe constantly moving and stay in one place for too long then it may create some discomfort and pain. That may be what is happening in your situation. 

Thank you for your question - the "40" you are referring to is the temperature in degrees Centigrade.  The ThermiSmooth uses the target temperature as the treatment endpoint and is usually not at all painful, as long as the temperature is SLOWLY increased.  Usually for skin tightening, I use a treatment temperature of 42 degrees.  Occasionally, patients will feel a brief period of discomfort or heat as we approach the treatment temperature - this ALWAYS passes and the treatment becomes totally pain-free after about one minute, even though the temperature is exactly the same (it feels cooler, but it isn't).  The pain you experience is coming from the change in temperature not from the temperature itself.  This explains why people can burn themselves without knowing it while using a heating pad.  They are not in pain, yet can get serious burns.  Your practitioner should try to increase the temperature slowly and may need to work on smaller areas of your face at a time.  Even if you can only tolerate 40 degrees, you should still see results, but you may require an additional session at that temperature.  I hope this was helpful.

Thermi Smooth's target temperature at the surface is between 42-45 degrees C.  The temperature of the skin always is higher than what is on the machine. I have tested this with the infrared camera.  I usually target 42 degrees C.  I find that on subsequent treatments patients can tolerate higher temperatures.  It is also essentially that your provider moves the hand pieces at a constant speed and uses enough gel.
