Hello and thank you for your question. In my practice, I use many layers of sutures for a tight closure. It is important to close the deep layers with sutures. Thebest advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation. If you are an appropriate candidate for a tummy tuck, this can be done through alow and short incision, all completely below the bikini line. The belly button can be designed to looknatural and have no scars on the exterior. Your muscles can also be plicated resulting in a flat abdomen. Make sure you specifically lookat before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgeryperformed by your surgeon and evaluate their results. The most importantaspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend that you seekconsultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluateyou in person.Best wishes and good luck.Richard G. Reish, M.D.Harvard-trained plastic surgeon
Optimally patients are permitted to shower on post op day 1. This enables good hygiene at the operative site. Being able to do so may be predicated on a surgeons ability to perform the drainless tummy tuck procedure as drains can sometimes be difficult in the shower. Wounds are closed with layers of sutures and then either mastisol with steri strips or Dermabond at the skin topical level. Drainless tummy tuck allows for earlier mobilization and return to routine hygiene. Talk with your surgeon about post op care.
The deep layers of closure need to be done with sutures, however for the final layer of skin closure I've had good results with both sutures and tissue adhesive so it's really what your surgeon feels will work best for you. Hope that helps!
Two types of glue are available for use in surgery. One is similar to superglue and is used to close the incision. That glue can only close the skin. Other sutures must be applied to the deeper layers. The other type of glue is fibrin glue and it is used on the inside to help prevent bleeding and to close off open spaces left behind from the operation. In my experience a neat subcuticular closure makes for neater skin apposition than the superglue and is also absorbable. We usually use the fibrin glue during the case for the aforementioned reasons. Check with your plastic surgeon and discuss the preferred method in their practice.I hope this helps
Suturing of the muscle plication and closure of the wounds is performed with sutures. Some surgeons will apply surgical glue to the skin surface after complete closure.
