Although cosmetic procedures are never covered by insurance, certain procedures related to your surgery may be covered by certain insurance carriers. Gynecomastectomy for male breast growth (Gynecomastia) is one that is sometimes covered. The cause for gynecomastia is frequently idiopathic, meaning that the cause is unknown in most cases. If it is determined that the cause is related to other causes such as anabolic steroids, marijuana, certain prescription medications, or liver failure, it will not be covered. If gynecomastia is not associated with a serious and life threatening medical situation like extreme pain or a cancerous tumor, the chances of getting approval for insurance coverage for gynecomastia surgery are low.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA
You may want to check directly with your insurance plan to see if they cover gynecomastia procedures. In general, most insurances do not cover surgery for correction of gynecomastia, or do so under rather extreme circumstances. Discussing the matter directly with your insurance carrier would be your best option. If your insurance states that this is a covered benefit, ask for the documents stating the requirements for authorization.
