Itchy, inflamed columella incision 5 days post-op tip-plasty/rhinoplasty (Photo)

Question

I had my surgery Friday, and my splint removed Tuesday. When I got home Tuesday, I used saline nasal spray to moisten and gently remove the dried blood from inside my nostrils. That evening, my incision started itching like crazy (maybe saline dried it out?). Sutures have been working free since yesterday (Tuesday). I'm afraid all the irritation is wreaking havoc on my incision and will result in a bad scar. How do I calm this irritation down? Can I use Aquaphor?

Hello and thank you for your question and photograph.  It is very rare to have an infection at the incision after rhinoplasty.  However, it does appear that there may be an infection at the site.  I highly recommend you see your surgeon immediately.Best wishes and good luck.

It appears from the photo that you may have a superficial infection.  My recommendation is to call your surgeon immediately and notify him or her of the situation.  In the meantime, keep the area moist with Neosporin or Polysporin.  You may likely also need oral antibiotics to stave off further infection.

If the nature of your incision has changed significantly you should contact your plastic surgeon for advice.

You need to return to your surgeon to have this seen.  You may have an infection of the incision site best treated with antibiotics.

Either allergic dermatitis or beginning cellulitis. Best to return to see your surgeon ASAP... ..........

I recommend calling your surgeon for an evaluation of the columellar incision. Treatment is warranted given the redness and swelling of the area - which should be determined by your physician. Early treatment can prevent further worsening and allow proper healing of that area.
