Will nasal polyp change face structure?

Question

I developed nasal polyp it didn't respond to steroids (flicsonase Currently I am unable to breath through the nose completely most of the time of the day. I have an operation in 4 weeks. In ny CT the polyp is pretty big and stratches a lot too. I find myself blowing my nose in wierd ways so I will be able to take the snot, liquid out (shrink my face etc etc...). Am I being freak thinking it might alter my face shape or something like that, and even if so , will it all return normal once its out?

Dear jackobNasal polyps do not routinely change the shape of your face. The surgery itself is also generally done by an endo-nasal approach and does not leave scars. Expect  to look exactly the same, however, once the crusting and swelling is over, expect to be able to breathe better after surgery. It is important to be compliant with sprays after surgery to minimize risk of return of the polyps.

Thanks for your question. Sorry to hear about your sinus problems. Nasal polyps are benign growths of the lining of your nose. Usually they grow in response to chronic inflammation from infections or allergies. While they will obstruct your breathing and affect your sense of smell, only very rarely will they change your facial shape. I have seen a couple of patients over the years with severe nasal polyps that they ignored to the point where the polyps were growing out of their nostrils. I know of a couple where their nasal bones were pushed out to the sides by the polyps, but this is extremely rare and requires you to ignore an obvious problem for many years. In your case, waiting another couple of weeks shouldn't matter. You'll feel a lot better once you get that thing cleared out. Good luck!

It's hard to advise someone without having all facts on hand such as CT scan results, polyp size and actual location. If the polyp is  located inside the nostril/s then surgery is the answer. In the hands of the experienced surgeon, your face will not change.Neal Handel MD.

The shape of your face should not change after the removal of your nasal polyp. The procedure is performed through the inside of the nose and should not change its external appearance. Be sure to discuss your concerns with your operating surgeon in order to get their re assurance.
