Is it safe for me to have a colonic irrigation a couple days before surgery to prevent being constipated & bloated? I have read that many women suffer from constipation and being uncomfortably bloated after breast surgery so I am wondering if this would help? Thanks
Answer: Colonic irrigation before breast surgery Some of the pain killers that you might be given following your surgery can be constipating. I would recommend staying well hydrated, eating a well balanced diet, and mobilising as soon as able after your surgery.

Answer: Surgery No, do not do a colonic irrigation which stirs up a lot of bacteria just before having breast surgery. Narcotics may cause bloating and constipation so drink lots of water, walk, and take stool softeners if needed.

Answer: Colonic irrigation This question is best answered by your surgeon as opinions vary. Typically patients have bowel elimination well managed through diet and moving around during recovery. If necessary laxatives can be considered.

Answer: Always best to check with your surgeon Constipation is often a side effect from the pain medication. In my practice, I prescribe stool softeners or laxatives if needed. It is possible you could still get constipated after surgery, a fact which would preclude the need or usefulness of a colonic irrigation before surgery.
