Can breast implants make my eczema worse?

Question

Im getting breast implants at the end of the month I’m really excited for this but I’m also pretty worried that it might exacerbate my ezcema. I know eczema is an inflammatory problem and I’ve heard that implants can cause inflammatory issues and I’m hearing a lot of bad things about breast implant illness at the minute I’m just looking for some reassurance? I’m on the combined pill too and I’ve heard it can cause ezcema but it hasn’t made it any worse (I’m getting silicone textured implants)

Dear amylouise23,
there have been numerous studies on the safety and efficacy of silicone breast implants. The FDA has approved them to be safe and breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure performed in the United States every year. Implants are much different than they used to be with rigorous testing and cohesive gel. I can't tell you how happy my breast augmentation patients have been with their implants.
I would recommend a consult with a plastic surgeon to go over all of your concerns. Saline implants are also a perfectly good option if you are still concerned and are less expensive.

Surgery is stress and stress can flare eczema.  There is less reaction with smooth implants and the least reaction with saline.

The true answer is no one knows. While I do not fully agree with breast implant illness and its varied manifestations, I feel we do not fully understand each persons autoimmune response. 
I have not seen an increase in skin issues with my implant patients (28 years in practice), but maybe some have not made the connection or ever complained to me. 
There’s no correct or incorrect answer here.  If you ever have a ‘flare up’ post augmentation, will you blame the implants?   That’s the true question here.
