Breast Implants with Fibroadenomas

Question

24 years old scheduled for breast aug with gel implants next month. Did my breast ultrasound last month and was diagnosed with several fibroadenomas in both breasts. However, breasts present fine - no lumps. Will this affect my surgery? Should my surgeon still be able to do my surgery?

Usually fibroadenomas are small and do not interfere with breast augmentation surgery, especially if implants are placed submuscularly. The first thing to discuss with your PCP or gynecologist is whether a biopsy is needed. If so, this should be done first. The size of fibroadenomas can also play a role as a superficial one may be become more pronounced once there is an implant placed. Be sure to notify your plastic surgeon of your diagnosis with fibroadenomas. The more precise you can be as to location or if you have a copy of your ultrasound report, that would be very helpful for the surgeon to discuss with you possible issues arising from the fibroadenomas.

Hello, thank you for your question. Certainly if you are going sub muscularly you wont have anything to worry about as this is under the muscle but if you plan to in the breast tissue sub glandular/ sub fascial then speak to your plastic surgeon about your concerns and they can examine and assess your breast tissue.

I encourage you to visit with your surgeon about the results from your ultrasound.  Some surgeons will be okay with proceeding but others may want further testing performed.  Your surgeon will guide you as to what is recommended for you.

Hello! On many occasions, fibrocystic breasts improve after an augmentation mammoplasty, because the compression of the mammary gland by the implant will cause existing fibroadenomas or cysts to atrophy.
