Some swelling and a “water retention” feeling after breast augmentation is normal, especially during the first few weeks. Most visible swelling improves noticeably by 4-6 weeks, but the breasts can continue to soften, settle, and look more natural over 3-6 months. With tuberous breast correction, areola reduction, and implants, the tissues may feel tight or firm for longer because both the skin envelope and lower pole shape are adjusting. Mild asymmetry, firmness, and changing breast position can be part of normal healing, but swelling should gradually trend down rather than worsen. Contact your surgeon promptly if you develop increasing pain, one-sided rapid swelling, redness, drainage, fever, shortness of breath, or a sudden change in breast size or shape. Your own surgeon can tell you whether your current amount of swelling fits your operation and timeline.
