How should I treat periosteal ossification after rhinoplasty?

Periosteal ossification simply means that bone has been laid down as a reaction to being roughed up or rasped from your prior rhinoplasty. Whether it will go away with more time is unknown although less likely greater than one year after your original surgery. If it is visible and an aesthetic concern only further surgery will resolve it.

There are no photos to review and they would not be conclusive even if they were for this type of problem. The periosteum is the layer of connective tissue that lies tightly adherent to the bones and provides the blood supply. At the interface between the bone and periosteum there are many types of immature bone cells that both form and remodel bone. Since bone is a living dynamic tissue there can be reactivity and new bone growth causing thickening after any trauma that causes inflammation (such as surgery). Although keeping the inflammation down with meds might be preventative, if there is a bony irregularity at 14 months out from surgery it will likely require a procedure to rectify…usually just some rasping to smooth things out. To my knowledge there is no medicine or non-surgical way of dealing with such a bump.
