Am I high risk for allergic reaction to Dysport or Botox?

Question

I sometimes get chronic hives, last one lasted 4 mos. I am also lactose sensitive. I have appt for Dysport or Botox for jawslimming and not sure if I'm too much of a risk and shouldn't consider.

Allergies to Dysport are very rare.  However, communicate your concerns to your provider.  You may initially want to do a spot test before getting a full treatment.  If you are allergic to Dysport or any of its ingredients, cow’s milk protein, or if you have had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product, such as Botox®, or Xeomin®, or have a skin infection at the planned injection site, you should NOT get Dysport Injections.  Best wishes, Dr. Aldo :-)

True allergies to Botox and Dysport have not been reported.  There is potential to react to the preservative in the saline or the cow milk protein in Dysport.  However, this would be very rare.  Speak with a Board-Certified specialist about all of your medical history and concerns prior to injections.  Best of luck.

This sounds like a true allergy. Many believe they have an allergy but the symptoms are not adding up to an allergy. Dysport is a botulinum as is botox so the concern would be for a cross reaction.I would not take the chance

It is highly unusual for someone to have an allergy to Dysport® or BOTOX® products themselves. This is because botulinum is a safe neurotoxin that has been used in medicine, cosmetics and research for decades. Having a history of hives or being lactose intolerant should not put you at high risk for an allergy. Be sure to visit an experienced injector to minimize your chances of adverse effects.

There are no reports of true Botox/Dysport allergies, but there have been documented allergies to the preservatives or the other additives in the solution.  These are very rare.  I recommend you see a board certified professional for a consultation and ask to be treated with a "test spot."  They will inject a tiny amount in the forearm or behind the ear and re-examine the area a few days later.  This allows him/her to check for allergy or reaction prior to performing an entire treatment.
