Drain liquid dark red and foul smell: I had a TT with lipo 9 days ago.

Question

The liquid coming out of my drain became dark red with a foul smell. My doctor keep telling me it's just" old blood'' but I'm still concerned because it didn't smell like this before. The amount has decreased from 40 ml a day to 25ml a day. Thank you.

Anytime there is a foul odor, there is a concern for infection.  It would be best if you are checked over in person by your surgeon to make sure this is not an issue for you.  Do you have any fever?  Redness near the incision?

Anytime the drainage changes and becomes foul smelling it should be evaluated. I agree that it is old blood coming out of the drain, however  if it has become foul smelling that may be a sign that the fluid has become infected. Call your plastic surgeon and let them know of the change.  Good luck.

Thank you for sharing your question.  As drains remain for a longer period of time they can develop a malodor that can be distinguished from an infection.  Without photographs or an in-person examination to confirm, I would recommend following your doctor's advice and maintain close contact to ensure no other issues are taking place.

I am sorry about this, I am sure it is unsettling. I usually pull a patients drains if they are putting out less that 30ml within a 24 hour period. Be sure you are stripping your drains well and emptying them frequently. Sometimes if there is a backup or the blood is sitting in the bulb for awhile, in can present an odor. Your drains may be ready to come out, but I would ask your plastic surgeon for specific instructions. Take care of yourself and thank you for your great question.
