How long after breast feeding can I get a breast lift/implants?

Based on experience and lack of hard data, most plastic surgeons would suggest waiting few months (4-8) after discontinuing breast feeding. However, there are patients that may have significant amount of milk in breast tissue even 2 years after giving birth and not breast feeding at all? Although breast lift surgery can be done safely despite of milk, placement of implant may hypothetically increase risk of infection or capsular contracture.

In general, it is recommended that you wait 3 to 6 months after breastfeeding before having any elective breast surgery.  Also, my patients are required to have a mammogram prior to any breast lift. Consult with a highly experienced board certified plastic surgeon for an in person evaluation.

I like to have my patients wait six months or so to allow for complete involution or return of the breast to the pre-pregnant size. Also, I have found that the vascularity of the breast is much larger soon after breast-feeding and would take many months for the caliber of these blood vessels to return to normal.
