Did I lose an eyelid fold? (photo)

Question

I had double eyelid surgery for the first time 4 months ago. I have the feeling my right eye has lost its fold. Since it's my first time having the surgery, I'm not sure what changes may take place during the healing process. If it is the case that my right eye has unfolded, what are my options for revision now? And how soon can I get it fixed?

Depending on the technique used, the crease failure rate may range from 5-15%, thus making revision surgery to recreate a crease not uncommon.  Your eyes will continue to change in appearance for a year, so follow up closely with your surgeon and let him/her know of your concerns to determine your options.  Generally it is best to wait a year before revision, to allow full healing, but they can be performed as early as 6 months if there is an issue that will clearly not resolve with healing.

Your lids appear asymmetric in that the crease on the left is more prominent. It is possible you would benefit from a revision on the right. Consult with your surgeon about when this would be best accomplished.

loss of a crease or fold is one of the more common postoperative issues after Asian eyelid surgery or double eyelid surgery.  I perform more Asian eyelid surgery than anyone in my area and mild revision rate is just above 1% at this time.  Your particular issue is about half of my revisions whether it be mild surgery or someone else's. You may be loosing the crease. Creases that are not permanent are one of the commonest complications of double eyelid surgery. Revisit your surgeon to see what he/she thinks.

You will need an examination in person to evaluate the upper lid crease. It is possible it is only skin overhang, thus only a skin removal is needed. if the crease is lost then you will need repeat of the surgerySamir Shureih MD. FACSsshureih@msn.com
