Fluid build up after abdominoplasty. When should I be concerned?

Five weeks ago today I got a Fleur de Lis surgery done. It removed almost 9lbs of excess skin. I had two drains in after surgery, one was removed after two weeks and then other three. However, since the second drain was removed two weeks ago, a lot of fluid has built up in my lower abdomen.Tomorrow, I will be going in to have excess fluid drained with a needle. This time, the area protrudes out more then before. My surgeon doesn't seemed too concerned but I am. Do I need another drain put in?

A seroma can happen after drain removal. Draining the fluid with a needle is the correct course of action as your surgeon is planning. On your part, you should maintain snug compression with whatever garment you are using, and avoid excessive activity. Seromas may need to be drained more than once, but certainly ensuring that you are keeping the area well compressed is the best thing you can do for now. Lymphatic massage can also be helpful, but ask your surgeon before pursuing that.

What you are describing is a seroma.  It is a pocket of fluid that has accumulated.  Your surgeon can drain these in the office and typically the patients tolerate this very well.  Your surgeon may recommend that you wear compression and watch your activity level to help keep the seroma from forming again.  Placing a drain is not usually necessary.
