Which is better, arnica or bromelain?

Hello! Thank you for your question! The recommendations for the use of these homeopathic medications are surgeon preference. I typically suggest the use of Arnica Montana to decrease swelling and bruising. It is an herbal medication that is propagated from the seeds of an herb. I, as well as my patients, have seen some benefit with the treatment in the postoperative period. Although there is little evidence to its effectiveness, I believe there is some benefit, and no harm. I recommend 4-5 tablets under the tongue 4x/day for 3-5 days prior and 5-7 days after the procedure. Both are similar with similar action - I prefer Arnica. Hope that this helps! Best wishes!

Both help reduce post op swelling and bruising, especially if started a week or two before surgery.  Pill form is easiest, fresh pineapple (not canned or juice) has bromelain in it, too.

Arnica and bromelain are separate supplements. Arnica is helpful with bruising while bromelain is helpful with swelling. Be sure to get good quality supplements if you intend to use these. One thing to note is that you should not take bromelain if you are allergic to pineapple.

Thank you four your question. Arnica Montana and Bromelain are herbal supplements that help with bruising, inflammation and clearance of bruising.  Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple. Some surgeons recommend taking both together.  The research is mixed regarding the benefits on shortening recovery, but they are probably not harmful and may help. Consult with your surgeon before starting. If you had facial surgery, you may want to consider a product called Occumend.  It comes in patches and has a higher concentration of Arnica and a good delivery method. It seems to help with post injectable, eyelid and nasal surgery bruising. Best wishes.
