JP drain out put went from low 20 cc to fast. Why going on?

Question

I'm day 4 post op of a tummy tuck and chest contouring with long incisions under the arm and chest. I have 4 drains, all have slowed down and are getting clear. Then the slowest of them all, left chest started producing lots of blood. Taken out 75cc in 4. 5 hours. I have had the compression garment on the entire time. How concerned should I be? At what point should I contact the Dr.?

Thank you for your question.  With this acute of a change in your drain output, I would recommend calling your surgeon's  office for an in-person evaluation.  It is best to catch issues before they become problems, and your surgeon knows the details of your procedure to help determine the cause of this increased drain output.

Hi, Skisteve007.  Variation on drain output can happen depending on your activity level.  If your drainage output amount changes suddenly and has bright red color, you should contact your surgeon to make sure that you do not have active bleeding or hematoma.  Best wishes.

Thank you for your question.  Anytime the drain outputs suddenly increase and turn bright or dark red, we worry about something starting to bleed.  Please remember that not all hematomas  occur immediately, many can occur days to weeks out.   Please contact your plastic surgeon immediately or get to your closest Emergency Room.  ThanksDr. Gill
