How long should I wait, after a breast lift, to get implants? 6 months post op.

Question

6 months ago, I had a breast lift with fat transfer. However, the fat transfer was not enough to give me the size I am looking for and I want to proceed with implants. Is it safe to get implants anytime or do I need to wait longer from the previous surgery?

Thank you for your question.  I would recommend discussing surgical timing with your operating surgeon directly as he/she is most familiar with your specific case.  With that said, I would venture to say that as long as you have healed well and have not experienced any recent changes in the last 3 months that you can most likely proceed with a breast augmentation at this point.  Please make sure to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon.  I wish you all of the best.

Dear ocuhoops,you should wait until you are fully healed. Most plastic surgeons would recommend you to wait 3-6 months so you should be able to get the revision surgery now. Thank you for your question. As long as you had no healing problems or complications e.g. infection after you last surgery (breast lift with fat transfer), it is reasonable to proceed with placement of breast implants at this time. Unfortunately not all the fat transferred is during such a procedure is ever expected to stay long term, and you may see even more fat "disappear" over the next few months. Plastic Surgeons refer to as the "take rate", which can vary between approximatly 30-50%. I recommend to be seen and examined by a board certified plastic surgeon to guide you in your breast implant selection process for you to achieve your desired breast size and outcome.

I would recommend to wait six months between surgeries, but remember that all depends on your health and lab tests.

The key is that your breasts have settled and stabilized before having another surgery.  Specifically, your skin should be soft, the swelling resolved and size and shape settled.  Usually, 6 months a good time point for these things, but with fat grafting it can make things a little more dynamic.  If you feel like they are still changing then I would recommend you wait until they are stable for 2-3 months.  A discussion and evaluation by a board certified plastic surgeon is important to determine goals, establish realistic expectations and develop a solid operative plan.
