Properly sized batten grafts and spreader grafts on a properly selected patients usually do not make the nose wider. However, if the grafts are made too thick or used on a patient who does not need them they can result in widening of the nose. This condition can be reversed by removing or thinning the grafts/
Without photos, it is difficult to assess which portion of the nose you are referring to. In some instances, spreader grafts will often make the bridge of the nose appear slightly wider. Batten grafts can add volume to a portion of the tip of the nose. Relay your concerns to your surgeon, as he or she will be able to appropriately offer the best advice. Best wishes!
Hello and thank you for your question. The goal of spreader grafts is to help improve breathing by opening up the internal nasal valave. Spreader grafts may also help straighten a deviated septum. Alar batten grafts may be used to change the shape of the ala or help prevent external nasal valve collapse. The most important piece of information to know is how far out from surgery are you? If you are less than 1 year from surgery, this can still be due to swelling. Appropriately placed cartilage grafts should not cause undesired aesthetic changes to the nose.Best wishes and good luck.
It is difficult to say without knowing specifics of your case, including time since your surgery, or seeing pictures. If this is a recent surgery, swelling may still be present. That being said, batten grafts tend to sit out wider on the nose, while spreader grafts are towards the middle. In general, spreader grafts may widen the dorsum of the nose, while batten grafts may provide fullness of the lateral part of the nose, above the nostrils. Follow up with your surgeon regarding expected improvement in the width and for a full evaluation of your concerns.
