Is a mammogram necessary before breast augmentation procedure?

Every plastic surgeon will have different requirements for pre-operative mammograms.  We currently do not require a mammogram for women under the age of 40 with no family history of breast cancer.The general recommendations for mammograms are to begin at age 50 if you have no family history of breast cancer. If you are planning an augmentation, lift, or reduction the general rule is to obtain a mammogram beginning at age 40.

For younger patients with a normal history and physical exam a mammogram is optional.  The American College of Surgeons.  The American Cancer Society provides guidelines for routine mammogram screening.

Thank you for your question.  A 21 year old with no history of breast cancer would not be required to have a mammogram prior to a breast augmentation procedure.  Best to seek care with a board certified plastic surgeon.  Good luck.

Every surgeon has their own protocol, but I suspect that most follow the regular guidelines for screening mammography based on age.  That's what we do in our practice, so you would not need a mammogram and 21 and no family history of breast disease.  Good luck!

A mammogram would not be necessary for you prior to surgery.  I typically require a screening mammogram for patients prior to breast surgery for patients 35 or older, and occasionally younger than that if the patient has a strong family history of breast cancer or has any findings on their exam that we would want to explore further.  Best of luck to you!
