How high are chances of infection leading to implant removal?

Hello , I’m getting a chin implant done under local anesthesia in august . My only concern is infection / having to get implant removed . How high are chances of infection leading to implant removal ? Many thanks

And the rate is also determined by the type of chin implant that is used. We exclusively use rubberized silicone chin implants. We leave the implants soaking in an antibiotic solution, and we change our gloves before inserting them. The likelihood of postsurgical infection is very low. Sometimes, chin implants are in advertently placed in an asymmetrical way, and sometimes this may require a touchup procedure. In the same light, if the tail of an implant impinges upon the nerve, it may lead to discomfort also requiring repositioning. Wishing you good luck with your procedure. Sincerely, Dr. Joseph

Great Question! Chin implant infection occurs in ~5% of cases. In my experience, I think this reported percentage is high, but I like to place most of my chin implants through a submental incision underneath the chin. This is beneficial in a number of ways:1. The implant doesn't touch the mouth, which is colonized with bacteria.2. Dehisence or opening of the incision if it occurs in the mouth, leads to saliva getting into the wound which would lead to bacterial seeding and delayed infection.3. The mental nerve, the sensory nerve that provides sensation to the chin and lower lip, has less chance of being disrupted via an extraoral incision.
The trade-off....a 2-3 cm incision in a natural fold underneath the chin that heals extremely well and is in a location that is rarely visible.

Chin implant infections can happen when an intra-oral approach is used.
It is very unusual if the incision is made through the skin.
