How will a chin implant affect my jowls? (photo)

The size and shape of the implant as well as how the soft tissues respond will determine the result.  I would adjust the size of the implant within the pocket to produce an improvement without worsening the jowls. Find a board certified plastic surgeon who performs hundreds
of facial procedures and chin implants each year. Then look at the

A photo of your profile would be helpful to determine if you might be a good candidate for a chin implant or not.  Extended chin implants can augment the pre-jowl area, which is the little depression between the chin and cheek along the jaw.  By doing this, it is possible to help camouflage the jowls a bit.  A facelift would improve the jowls by lifting them.  Liposuction of the neck would help to reduce fullness in that area and create a better angle.  It is also possible that all procedures together might be the best option.  

The answer to your question is that a chin implant can improve the neck and jaw line and bring your chin forward so that you have a better cervicomental or jaw/chin angle. The chin implant by itself will not significantly impact the jowls. However, liposuction with the chin implant may be an option or as I do in a lot of patients, perform a chin implant in conjunction with a facelift. This will often yield the greatest improvement but I would seek the opinion of several surgeons in your area if you are still confused. Good luck.

The only way to address the jowls is with a facelift to re-suspend them back into the cheek area. This is done with a combination of tightening the facial muscles and skin. The pre-jowl sulcus present along the jawline can be addressed with a chin implant as a stand-alone procedure or with a chin implant in combination with a facelift. 

It is hard to say from looking at a single picture, but if you are over 45 I would say the chin result will be great but the  jowl result will be minimal.  They make prejowl implants to improve this area but I am not a fan of them.  If you have jowling, the only reliable treatment is a facelift.  I performed 90 facelifts last  year and about 20% of these patients do chin implants at the same t i me for the best treatment.Joe Niamtu, III DMDCosmetic Facial SurgeryRichmond, Virginia

Many times, you need to go with your gut!  If the surgeons are equal (have experience and Board Certified in Facial Plastic Surgery or Plastic Surgery), you need to speak with them and decide who makes the most sense.You could have a chin implant, but it would not address the jowls.  If that is your issue, you would benefit froma facelift and sculpting to shape your face.
