Ruptured saline implant, but can I continue with IVF and remove/replace implants later?

Question

I am 46 years old and going through IVF. I got saline implants 12/2006. On 1/2022 my right implant ruptured. I went and got a mammogram and it was confirmed. I have no pain or discharge. My intention was to have them removed after I had my baby, but unfortunately my implant ruptured. My question is, can I wait to have the implants removed after I have a baby if I am able to get pregnant ? I do want to add that I am in good physical shape and I’m a long distance runner.

Hello @Witty674625 thank you for your question. When an implant ruptures, it is best to remove it as soon as possible. However, implants can be removed at any time. in most cases, it is best to remove implants as soon as possible after rupture. Sometimes it is possible to remove them under local anesthesia. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations.

Although it is easier to remove a saline implant in the early stages of rupture, you can remove it whenever it is more convenient. The implant is not going anywhere.

You should get the information re your implant especailly if it is textured or smooth. If smooth, they can often be removed  under local anesthesia. On the other hand, there is no specific harm to leaving them in deflated.
