Is it okay to get botox on only one side of jaw for TMJ?

My jaw only locks up and aches on the left side of my face. Although I do clench both sides of my jaw sometimes, I still clench my left side more than my right. Would it be alright for me to only get botox for one side of jaw, or will that cause complications in the way my jaw functions?

When evaluating a patient for masseter injection with a neuromodulator there are multiple factors to consider including patient reported symptoms as well as physical exam. There are occasions where unilateral neuromodulator use is appropriate. Consult with your provider for specific recommendations.

The beauty of botulinum toxin (e.g. Botox, Dysport, etc), is that you can adjust and account for various asymmetries, so yes, you can inject only the left side of the masseter with Botox to treat your TMJ clenching/pain. That said, you might still put a small dose on the other side.

Hi This is Ebru Acar,MD.İf there is an irregular view or hipertrophy of one side, botox can be applied only for this area. It doesnt have to be applied equal doses for each. probably you have a teeth problem with the less biting function side. After botox injection, ıt will be better to see a dentist.

It is always recommended to treat with Botox symmetrically. It might be a trial of dosage with your Botox provider as one side may just need a little less than the other.
