Possible UTI- tummy tuck in 2 days!

Question

I got a positive for leukocyte and negative for nitrates on an at home test. Sitting in convenient care right now. No fever. No burning. Just a little uncomfortable. My tummy tuck is scheduled in 2 days and my PS office is closed until tomorrow. I will obviously follow their instructions, but until then, I'm upset. I'm really disappointed about possibly rescheduling.

Let your plastic surgeon know what is going on before your surgery. Rescheduling is better than landing in the hospital with a serious wound infection and a ruined tummy tuck result. Having surgery with an infection in your bladder will dramatically increase the risks of infection. Best wishes, Dr. ALDO

A full urinalysis can determine the degree of the UTI. This information will be useful to your plastic surgeon to see if they are okay proceeding in 2 days or if you will need to reschedule.

Thank you for your question.  I would speak to your surgeon as soon as you can.  We all have slightly different pre operative and post operative instructions.  Some might say as long as your on antibiotics your good to go but others might want you to hold off until its all clear.  I would follow his instructions as he knows best for his patients.  Best of luck to you

This is something to discuss with your surgeon for sure.  However, if you are on antibiotics for the UTI, you are probably safe to proceed with the surgery.  A UTI is a localized infection and should not have any contact per say with the surgical planes from an abdominoplasty.  Always better to be safe, but if your surgeon feels that it is still ok to proceed than I would go with their recommendation.  I hope this helps.

sorry to hear that you may have UTI before your upcoming surgery. Discuss this matter with your plastic surgeon to come up with a plan.if you truly have an infection, it's better to postpone your surgery rather than have postoperative complications. Best of luck!

If there is truly an infection, then you will receive treatment and you may have to delay your surgery.  However, finding out you have the UTI before surgery is much better than not knowing and subjecting yourself to a higher rate of infection for the tummy tuck.

You should have a full urinalysis and clean catch urine culture and sensitivity now. Then contact your surgeon and tell the office where they can get the laboratory results. Start antibiotics as soon as prescribed. A typical UTI can be treated easily, but an infection that develops in such a large surgical site, as the abdomen can be a major problem. Safety first. Avoidance of infection is one of the important factors in getting the best surgical results.
