Can I run a half marathon 3 weeks after closed tip Rhinoplasty?

Hi, I just had a closed tip rhinoplasty on 9/10/14. I had signed up for a half marathon for 9/28/14. Is it okay to run this distance so soon after the nose job? What would happen if I did? If you advise against it, when would you suggest I can run that distance?

LA9582,I myself would not advise my patients to run this distance so soon after surgery. It is best to check with your doctor as to when you will be able to run this distance again, however my assumption would be another month. It is best to pace yourself and try not to overwork your body after surgery. The heat would cause you to swell more and the blood rush might leave you light headed. I recommend starting off with a light workout and gradually making your way back into marathons.Hope this helps!Dr. Ali Sajjadian

You should always ask your surgeon about return to exercise after surgery. I would not advise one of my patients to do a half marathon so soon after an extensive surgery such as rhinopasty. The nose is still soft and healing can be disrupted that early after a rhinoplasty. Light activity is usually ok but as a marathon runner I do not consider a race to be light activity. It may be possible for you to run a half marathon 3 weeks after rhinoplasty, but you should confirm this with your surgeon.  Only your surgeon knows exactly what was done during your procedure and is most familiar with your health.  I would follow whatever advice your surgeon gives.

In general, it is best to avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks after rhinoplasty. There is always a risk for injury to the nose in the postoperative period which may affect the result of the surgery. This allows for reduced swelling and for the nasal bones and grafts to heal in the appropriate position.  With strenuous activity, there is also a risk for bleeding, particularly if a septoplasty or turbinate reduction was done as well. Light activity on a treadmill or stationary bike should be fine. I would recommend seeing your doctor prior to the marathon. If your doctor feels you have appropriately healed from surgery, he or she will clear you to participate in the marathon.

Could you run a half marathon before your rhinoplasty? (that's a variation of an old joke.) Seriously, as a Plastic surgeon and a runner, I would not. That doesn't mean that you couldn't without causing a problem, but why risk it? Anything that raises your blood pressure can lead to increased swelling. Although I let patients return to exercise about two weeks after tip rhinoplasty, for most people a half marathon is a stress. There will be plenty of other half marathons to run; I would honestly hold off on that distance for a solid six to eight weeks after surgery depending on your level of fitness. I'm sure your surgeon would agree.

It is doubtful that your surgeon will want you to do a half marathon 3 weeks after Rhinoplasty surgery.  Follow up with your surgeon for confirmation.  Best wishes for a fast recovery!
