Is there permanent scarring after liposuction?

Question

I am interested in liposuction, most likely smart lipo. I feel that I bruise and scar easier than most, and want to know if there is permanent scarring or marks after a procedure? I am looking to have a few areas done- upper and lower stomach, thighs, love handles, and bra rolls. I am certainly willing to do these procedures in phases and not all at not, as I am a 24y/o college student and do not have the time to be laid up in recovery for too long.

Hi,The entry ways for liposuction access are extremely small. They end up about the size of a mole and will continue to fade and shrink for the first 12 months.  I always educate my patients to be  patient with those areas and over time you will be hard pressed to notice them.  All access points are placed in well hidden areas as well to help patients with conceal the areas.Your down time should be minimal as most of my patients are back to work within 24 hrs, the added bonus of being young should help you rebound quickly!

Our treatments use combination therapy to improve the epidermis and dermis for most deep scars. The options available for acne scars depend on the character of your scars, in terms of topography and contour. We see atrophic and hypertrophic acne scars, as well as scars that have hypo and hyperpigmentation. We begin each scar evaluation with an assessment of scar quality and subtype. Our main concern is rebuilding collagen and that is why we use a HIDEF protocol that includes combination therapy. Morpheus 8, scar subcision, fibrous release, fractional laser, CO2 laser, Thulium laser, PDL Vbeam laser, and fractional resurfacing can be used in addition to TCA Cross and chemical peels to further improve skin. Patients should start Melarase AM and Melarase PM for active hyperpigmentation. Always begin with a consultation to decide whether early subcision should be started.

hello caseyh Patient’s scars will mature following surgery; they may be red or raised for the first few months, but after 6–12 months they will soften, lighten, and become less noticeable. Lipo is done through tiny incisions which are hidden in strategic areas like the armpits, the navel, below the bikini line, etc. Usually they are unnoticeable without a very close inspection and in fair skinned people they are almost invisible. You can certainly divide your lipo into more than one session if you feel that the recovery would be milder and quicker. My patients typically return to work in 2 days after lipo and resume exercise in 2 weeks even after 360 lipo of the torso.

There is a very small mark from the cannula after Liposuction. Although this is a scar, for most patients it diminishes over time with help of scare gel like silagen. Peels and Carboxy therapy can also help diminish your incision scars.

Hello and thank you for your question. Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that uses cannulas (small tubes) to suction fat from the body. As a result, you will have some small scars at the entry points made during the procedure. Your board certified facial plastic surgeon will locate these entry points at natural folds in the skin and in areas concealed by clothing to minimize their appearance. Also, these scars will lighten and fade over time and most often will be extremely difficult to detect, especially if you have fair skin. I hope this information helps you. While all surgeries are associated with scarring, because the cannulas that are used for liposuction are typically 4 mm in diameter or less, the scars after liposuction are extremely small.  In addition, an experienced surgeon will typically place those scars in favorable skin lines that minimize subsequent scars, and in areas typically hidden under clothing.  As far as recovery time, for a healthy young women such as yourself, you should be back at your normal activities within a week or so after the procedure.

i have now done almost 800 cases in my office under local anesthetic, often with oral sedation. no IV's. Almost everyone returns to work the next day. You do get scars but they are only 3mm and they fade with time. i think you will be very pleased with Smartlipo. Remember there is no magic. if you want to look your best, combine this with more aggressive dieting and exercising and be patient. you will continue to improve for 6 months.david berman md
