I had a facelift and full face laser 2 months ago. My biggest reason for having surgery was my jowls. I was disappointed that the jowls started to reappear after about a month … I was hoping that it was just swelling. But at two months they are still there and are slowly creeping down into my neck again. Is this something you would normally see with a facelift – is it just swelling? How should I discuss with my Doctor? Are there any quick remedies? Your comments are appreciated.
Answer: Jowls Returning Thank you for your question and pictures. Two months is too premature to start factoring the results. A facelift which targets the SMAS muscle can variety in longevity depending on the patients skin quality, lifestyle etc. When the SMAS muscle has been targeted this is the reason for it lasting. If the skin is targeted ONLY this will only last a few months. Typically patients who are older and have a lot of skin laxity, the results will not last as long as a younger patient with better quality skin. Please consult your surgeon as sometimes its hard to predict patients skin, therefore it maybe a case of just needing a little adjustment which could be performed under local anaesthetic. This is easy to rectify. All The Best

Answer: Recurrent Jowls Recurrent jowls after a facelift are very unusual, especially as soon as two months. There are many types of facelifts, and I feel that each face needs to be treated with the technique that would give the best, longest lasting result. A full evaluation would be necessary to evaluate the cause and treatment for the recurrent jowls. I would recommend that you just be honest with your surgeon and discuss the fact that you are disappointed that you are seeing a recurrence of your jowls.Andrew Campbell, M.D.Facial Rejuvenation SpecialistQuintessa Aesthetic Centers

Answer: Revisional surgery of the gel after facelift. Correction of the jowl's requires complete release of the ligaments along the angle of the jaw. In your particular case I would've explore the buccal fat pad.

Answer: Facelift Not all facelifts are the same and some results can be technique dependent. It does appear you have significant fullness in the jowl area. Sometimes direct excision of the fat in this area helps, as well as more SMAS flap elevation.

Answer: Facelift and jowls thank you for your question and your photos. You certainly have recurrence of jowls within couple of months of facelift surgery which should not be the case. A well done facelift should last 8-10 years. It's best to have a thorough in discussion with your surgeon about your concerns. If you are not satisfied than consider a second opinion with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area to discuss all of your treatment options. Best of luck!
