How do I wear a night guard for teeth grinding while I sleep the first few days after rhinoplasty?

Hello! I am having a rhinoplasty soon and I am concerned how I will wear my night guard during the first few nights when I will be unable to breathe out of my nose while I sleep. I wear a night guard because I grind my teeth in my sleep and have dental work that requires protection. Do you have any advice or suggestions that I should bring up to my doctor? Thank you!

In many rhinoplasty surgeries no nasal packing is used and you can breathe through your nose at night.  You should bring this up with your surgeon.  There are nasal stents that can be placed at the time of surgery which have holes inside allowing you to breathe a little bit at night.  These are called Doyle splints.RegardsDr. J

You can certainly use your night guard immediately after your rhinoplasty if you feel comfortable in doing so. It may well be, however, that it may interfere with mouth breathing which you will need when you nose is too congested to breathe through. In that case, you will be unable to wear the nightguard until you can breathe better through your nose.
