I was not given or told to get a compression wrap after chin liposuction. Nurse wrapped my head w/ gauze. Normal?

Question

I just had chin/jawline lipo and was wrapped with gauze (see picture). It's been about 20 hours so far. I was not given the standard chin compression wrap that others seem to have. Nurse said to leave this gauze wrap on for 7 days however it's not very tight. Is this normal? I've ordered a chin compression wrap but it won't be here until 10 PM tonight.

My preference, is to have patients use a compression garment after liposuction under the chin.  Each surgeon will have their own preferences though.  I think it will be fine for you to use the compression garment that you have ordered, but it should be snug and not too tight.  You should be able to speak and swallow while it's on without a problem.  There are types of gauze that do provide compression, so it is possible that your dressing is okay.  You may want to call your surgeon's office to discuss your concerns.

It’s unusual to not have specific post op instructions after surgery. Compression is the standard of care after liposuction, either with a formal predesigned chin or neck garment, or simple gauze and kerlix. They all serve the same purpose. Refer back to your doctor’s office for further instructions. Good luck!

I would follow your plastic surgeon's advice. Ace and compression garments serve the same purpose. Each plastic surgeon has his own protocol for his/her technique. If concerned, discuss directly with your plastic surgeon and ask him/her if they approve of the compression garment you ordered.

each provider will have their own protocol. I put less emphasis on compression garments than most plastic surgeons. My practice is focused exclusively a liposuction and fat transfer procedures. There is little scientific evidence the compression garments serve any purpose at all. Generally the chin heals more rapidly and better than other part  of the body.  I would follow the instructions as given.
