Each surgeon will have their own preferences for care after surgery. I personally prefer to have my patients use a compression garment after liposuction of the neck (under the chin). I do not think that tape on the skin would provide any compression though.
I would not consider keeping the skin a form of compression. I'm not sure why this was done. Tape is often used over the nose after rhinoplasty surgery. I personally avoid using skin and he saves like tape becauseof the complications that it can cause. In particular if the skin or dermis swells significantly after surgery and the epidermis is not allowed the same ability to stretch because of the tape adhesive a layer of insufficient blood supply can arise causing an ischemic injury with blistering of the skin and possible skin death. Why this can't happen it's not common and I'm guessing your doctor has done this many times before and finds some benefit in doing so. I don't think it would be appropriate for us to direct you to change your postoperative care. Best, Mats Hagstrom M.D.
It will take a few months to have a better idea of the results from the liposuction under your chin. There would still be some expected swelling present 5 days after the procedure, and this can cause you to appear worse than before the surgery.
