Is a forehead reduction at 20 too young?

I start performing this procedure on patients age 16 or older.  At age 16 one would still need parental consent, but parents are often on board with this as they know how much their child has been troubled with the high hairline.  Age 20 is certainly not too young to have this procedure and age has nothing to do with your risk or lack of risk for having a raised scar.  

Typically, a female patient that is over 18 with a stable hairline is a fine candidate for a forehead reduction surgery.  The hairline does not typically get better with age.  There may be other factors that would lead a surgeon to believe you would develop a poor or highly visible scar, but age would not be the issue. There is no age restriction.  All surgeries (no matter now minor) has risks.  It is for you and your doctor to discuss these risks versus the benefits. If you are considering a cosmetic surgery, it is best to see a doctor in person for an examination so you can better understand realistic outcomes after your doctor has a chance to listen to your exact goals. 
Everyone's goals and expectations are different and seeing a photo cannot determine if you would be a candidate.

A hairline advancement always leaves a small scar that will normally be well hidden in the hairline in a couple months.  Age is not a factor for women - the reason we don't often do this procedure for men is that most men will have some hairline recession in their life and that will make in the scar quite visible.  If you have a history of bad scarring or have a dark skin tone you have a higher likelihood of developing a visible scar, but this is true at any age. -Dr. Rolfes

A forehead reduction can be done at age 20, but there is no way to do the surgery without a scar.  The scar is placed along the hairline, and it can be visible if you pull your hair back.  I have my patients wear bangs if they can for the first 6 months or so until the scar is less noticeable.  The final appearance of any scar is always somewhat unpredictable as it depends on surgical technique, suture material used, and the variability and individuality of scar formation. 

I would like to see pictures of your hairline and know more about your medical and family history. In general male pattern hair loss is different than female pattern hair loss and we don't have to chase the hairline over time. Forehead reduction can be performed at your age and generally scars do become invisible as hair grows into the scar. Factors that may make the scar more apparent are history of keloids, and hypertrophic scarring. It's imperative to avoid sun exposure after surgery for at least 6 weeks. Sun block and wearing a hat would be recommended post op.Today, with the new methods of FUE hair restoration, we can lower hairline or create a new frame to your face with no scarring or any sign of the procedure. That is why most people chose hair transplant as opposed to surgical forehead reduction.

Age has nothing to do with your decision re a forehead reduction; it will not get better with time. Consider the Irregular Trichophytic Hairline Incision technique that I described many years ago. If done by an experienced surgeon the hairline incision is not a problem.
