Low placed nipples and their effect on breast augmentation

Question

Just left a consultation, I was told I have low placed nipples, sitting at 3 inches when I stand with my hands down at my sides. However I am able to easily poke my nipple and move it upwards at least 2 inches. I know regularly your nipple is supposed to sit at about 6 inches up from the bottom of the breast. However because mine are so small my nipples just sit low. I'm wondering if any doctors and patients have encountered such an issue and still got centralized nipple results.

Breast augmentations do not change nipple locations.  Sometimes a breast augmentation can be performed with the nipple in a low position and the patients are very happy with the results.  As plastic surgeries we are taught the ideal aesthetics of the body and therefore strive to create it.  It could be you will be happy with an augmentation and no lift but if you are not happy with the nipple position you can go back in and have the lift as a seperate operation.  I have a special 3D camera that would show you the likely appearance if your breasts with just an augmentation, just a lift or both.  This will help you decide which treatment is the best to meet your goals. Good luck

I am not sure what you mean by low nipples.  Sometimes they are low on the chest wall, as happens with age and weight loss, and sometimes they are low due to drooping below the breast crease.  The nipple and areolae can be lifted during the breast augmentation.  This will cause additional scars.  Sometimes the scar will just be around the areolae.

Without seeing you in person (or even photos), it is impossible to say. Yes, low placed nipples will affect your outcome, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you can't achieve a positive looking breast augmentation. Perhaps it would be a good idea to seek a second opinion? Best, Dr. Nazarian

Thanks for your post.  This is an excellent question.  In the context of breast augmentation, some of the answer depends on what your goals are in terms of breast size.  If the nipple to IMF distance is short but the skin is sufficiently lax, breast augmentation is possible without lowering your natural inframammary crease.  If however, the skin is not sufficiently lax and the nipple to crease distance is short, sometimes this requires lowering your native inframammary crease to a new position to accommodate the implant.  It can be a little more challenging so be sure to seek out an experienced plastic surgeon.  Regardless, patients with a low nipple position can still get excellent results with breast augmentation. This would be a great question to ask some plastic surgeons in your area, who can examine you and determine the best surgical approach for you.  Augmentation alone can raise the nipple slightly, but if the nipple is very low sometimes an augmentation with mastopexy (lift) is required.

Honestly, without photos one cannot really address your specific situation. There IS a definite difference in "where the breast lives" on the chest wall from patient to patient and this does influence the final result. All the implants do is take YOUR breasts (where they are now) and make them bigger.

This is not uncommon, and the solution depends on the skin elasticity. If your skin can easily stretch to accommodate implants, nothing or minimal lowering of the inframammary crease would be needed. If your skin is tight, then lowering of the submammary crease is the best approach.
