Will HA filler in my cheeks/under eyes make my fluid retention look even worse?

I read that HA fillers retain water. I already have a puffy face/under eyes due to allergies, fluid retention improper lymph drainage, and thought trying a filler would help by adding volume but will HA filler make the problem worse by making more water retention ?

Your question is difficult to answer without an in-person examination or pictures. In general, you are correct that Hyaluronic Acid fillers do retain varying degrees of fluid depending on the filler. If the wrong filler is chosen, or if it is injected improperly then it can definitely make your under eyes look worse. That's why it's so important to choose your injector wisely. Under eye injection requires advanced technique for optimal results, so make sure you are under the care of an experienced physician provider. Best wishes.

Hello BVCXZ.  Without photos it is very difficult to answer your question.  In some cases a bulging fat pad below the eyes can be camouflaged with dermal fillers and in other cases it's best for surgery.  Post photos for more information.  Best of luck.

Thank you for your question. It is difficult to make an accurate assessment and recommendations without an evaluation. I recommend you seek an in-person consultation with a facial plastic surgeon or plastic surgeon who can perform a thorough examination and discuss with you the best treatment options to meet your aesthetic goals. Hyaluronic acid fillers do tend to attract water to create the desired plumping effect so it could potentially enhance or compound any fluid retention issues you have. If you have a volume deficient area and the filler is injected in a conservative manner, you may be able to still achieve the result you are desiring.

It's really difficult to answer the question without pictures. If eyes bags are severe, surgery is going to get the best results and filler won't help. If the bags are minor, properly placed Restylane (not Juvéderm) will improve the area and hide the bags. This is the most difficult area to get right with fillers. I will always use cannulas for this for improved safety and less downtime/bruising. Juvéderm tends to lead to more water retention and chronic swelling and it is to avoid in this area.

Hi there. Great question! Fillers that are HA-based do indeed attract some water, but those that are generally used over bone attract less water than other fillers. What will be more important is that the filler is placed so that it conceals your areas of puffiness and does not further block any drainage! When you meet with your injector, be sure to mention your concerns. You injector should be able to show you the exact places (and techniques) that will help minimize the puffiness and not highlight it!
