Would filler or Ultherapy be better for jowls starting to form? (Photo)

Question

I was told a little filler slightly above the chin area would help with smoothing the line from jaw jowl to chin? I was told previously to put some in my cheek/jaw but then later told by a different physician this option. Or would you suggest Ultherapy?

Thank you for your question. I suggest a combination of both fillers and Ultherapy. Fillers are excellent for restoring fullness to areas of the face that have lost volume and Ultherapy gradually lifts the skin using ultrasound technology. Hello and thank you for your question. From your photo you seem to have a little early jowling which can be addressed in several different ways. One method is not necessarily better than another but should be chosen on how much you want to spend, do you have any available downtime etc.  You have two issues;one is too much adipose tissue sagging in that area and one is a deficiency of bone.  You can treat this with Kybella to dissolve some of the fat and a filler such as Juvederm or Restylane or Bellafill or fat to augment the deficiency. Depending on the appearance from the frontal view, it is possible a mini lift or "weekend" lift may also be appropriate.  Furthermore, cheek augmentation will also elevate the jowl and could be considered.  Regarding Ultherapy for this problem, I do not recommend it.  Bottom line is you really need an in person consultation with a board certified physician to determine the best option for you. There are multiple treatments options available all depending on the degree of aging  and whether you want non-invasive or minimally invasive treatment. Severe jowling is usually treated with re-draping the skin as with a short incision facelift. Fillers work well when placed in the pre-jowl area along the chin. This usually provides a well contoured youthful jawline. Sometimes Botox at the corners of the mouth and skin re-surfacing is helpful. good luck.

I recommend fillers for the jowls themselves but also lifting around the mouth and cheeks to build underlying anatomical support. I would use filler to the cheeks to help provide fullness to that area which helps to improve the appearance of the jowls.  I like to use Restylane Lyft for this area.  I have seen good results from filler to help with jowls.  As far as Ultherapy goes, I do not use it in my office.  We have had many patients come to our office for treatment after Ultherapy because it did not help them.  They also reported that the procedure is painful.  You should visit a Plastic Surgery who is skilled in facial injection to see what their recommended treatment is for you.

As a single treatment I would recommend volume augmentation with filler to correct slight jowling.  The jowling effect happens for two main reasons: 1.  There is descent of the superficial and deep jowl fat pad over time and 2.  There is volume loss to the skin of the lower lip.  These two things together create a stepped off from the lateral cheek skin to the central lower lip and chin skin.  We perceive this step off as the marionette lines and jowls.  Although filler will not lift the jowl fat pads back to their original position they can help blend the transition to provide smooth contours.  This helps improve the marionette lines and jawline.  There are other options including mini face lifting to lift the jowl fat pads as well as resurfacing to tighten the skin, but as a stand alone procedure volume augmentation with filler is probably best.  There is little risk and little down time while providing natural appearing results. I would recommend finding a provider in your area to discuss your options in more detail. Hi,This picture is inadequate to give you a good answer. In general, Ultherapy is useful for skin laxity, but not for an accumulation of fat, which is what the jowls are. Fillers around the mouth can be tricky if done improperly - when overfilled it looks terrible. A new alternative is something called FaceTite, which is radiofrequency assisted lipolysis of the jowl fat. Simply put, the energy or heat generated by the radiofrequency device destroys the fat cells can causes the skin to shrink and tighten over the treated area. It is a nice alternative (to surgery) for patients exhibiting early jowling and sagging skin.Best,

Fillers or fat injections can be injected to augment the pre=jowl area to soften the fullness of jowls and improv the contour along your jawline. I am not able to comment on your cheeks with this very limited picture.
