Enlarged pores on stomach post Smart Lipo (Photo)

Question

I am 2 weeks post smart lipo. I began to notice that I have many dots in my skin. After taking a picture it seems like my pores are enlarged. Is this a normal reaction? Is there something I can do to reduce this?

Subcutaneous edema has caused your skin to have the appearance of an orange peel. This is a common side effect of lipo. Some management pearls: continue your compression garment as advised by your surgeon, exercise thirty mins daily, seek assistance from a lymphatic massage specialist, consider adding pineapples and papayas to your diet (for their anti-inflammatory properties). You will be able to appreciate your new shape in 6-12 weeks. Hope this finds you well.

Peau d'orange is caused by swelling near the skin surface usually from trapped or slowly draining lymphatic fluid among other things. See your surgeon to make sure you don't require and active fluid drainage.

Thanks for the question and the photos. The surgeons that have answered have given nice responses as to what is going on.  When we have seen this, in most every instance this has resolved.  What we do now is that post-SmartLipo, we will use one of the advanced RF skin tightening devices to contour the skin more and at the same time resolving this concern in almost every case.

What you see in this photo is caused by swelling. The solution is to continue wearing compression your compression garment and to begin massaging the area. This will help to keep fluid from building up in the area. Don't worry it will go away! Best of luck, Dr. M

What you are demonstrating is redundant skin which results in this appearance as it collapses on itself. What you need is to have a tummy tuck to remove redundant skin especially since SMART lipo has not resulted in any net improvement in your contour highlights.

From the photos you provided, you appear to be demonstrating what is termed peau d'orange (orange peel) skin, where the skin develops the appearance of an orange peel. This is due to the swelling of the skin and soft tissues resulting from surgical trauma. This will subside as the swelling subsides over a period of weeks to months. Wearing a compression garment 24/7 and limiting activity will hasten resolution.
If concerned, discuss with your surgeon at your next visit.
