I started taking birth control for the first time and as a result I’ve had my period for almost 3 weeks now with very painful cramps the entire time. I wanted to start taking ibuprofen today to help with the bloating and cramps but I have a lip filler appointment for just half a syringe in 6 days and was wondering if it would be a bad idea to take ibuprofen this much leading up to my appointment.

Answer: Yes this is a very bad idea. You will look like you have been punched in the mouth. The ibuprofen inhibits platelets for weeks. I recommend stopping for 3 weeks to allow the platelet function to normalize before having treatment. Less time means you are more likely to bruise. While your spotting might be related to your birth control, I would also encourage you to speak with the doctor who prescribed your birth control pill or see your gynecologist regarding this symptom. You might have another issue or need a different birth control pill formulation.

Answer: Ibuprophen, Advil, Motrin, Excedrin etc. not a good idea before fillers NSAIDS or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs such as Advil should not be taken for at least a week before surgery or filler injections. While these medications reduce pain, they also inhibit clotting, leading to a high risk of bruising when having fillers done. Even if your injector uses a canula, you will probably bruise, since lips are very vascular. It takes your body 7 days to make new platelets that are unaffected by the drug.
